What Is Acne?

Acne is a widely recognized form of skin disorder, and it manifests most frequently when the skin’s pores expand and get clogged. The pores are filled because of a combination of oil which is also referred to as sebum, dead skin, and sometimes bacteria. Once clogged, the pores can result in several types of bumps which may include whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and in rare and severe scenarios deep cysts and tender lumps known as cysts or nodules.

Although most commonly seen on the face, the breakouts are not isolated to the face only. Acne may manifest wherever there is more active secretion of the oil glands such as the back, chest, shoulders, and arms. For some people, like the most acne suffers, acne is a short-lived experience, especially in males in their teens, and gets treated on its own or with minimal intervention. This is not the case for everyone though as some will struggle with acne for most of their adulthood. In such situations acne can become really severe and case permanent damage in the form of scars or dark pigmentation that requires significant time to treat. Even though acne does not affect your overall health, it can be exceptionally troubling for one’s mental wellbeing. Managing the perpetual outbreaks can be detrimental to self-esteem as well as to one’s self-image. Feeling irritated or embarrassed is entirely understandable. The bright side is that acne can be controlled, and the skin starts to feel and look healthy again through effective management — appropriate treatment from a doctor, even gentle solutions, can make a difference.

  • Acne is common in mature age too, especially for women due to PCOS, pregnancy, or menopause

How Does Genetics Play a Role in Acne?

  • Genetics plays a big role in whether someone gets acne
  • If your parents or siblings had acne, your chances are higher too
  • Inherited factors such as overproduction of oil, hormonal changes, or the skin’s response to inflammation can make it more likely
