What Is a Skin Lesion?

A skin lesion is any abnormal lump, bump, or area of skin that looks different from the surrounding tissue. Lesions can be benign (harmless) or occasionally precancerous or cancerous, which is why proper assessment is important.

Common types of skin lesions include:

  • Moles
  • Skin tags
  • Warts
  • Seborrheic keratoses
  • Cysts
  • Actinic keratoses
  • Basal or squamous cell carcinomas (non-melanoma skin cancers)

How Is a Skin Lesion Removed?

Safe, effective lesion removal tailored to your needs and diagnosis.

Removal Methods We Use:

  • Excision - The lesion is surgically cut out and the wound is closed with stitches.
  • Shave Removal - The lesion is shaved off the surface of the skin.
  • Cryotherapy - Freezing the lesion with liquid nitrogen (commonly used for warts or keratoses).
  • Curettage & Cautery - Scraping off the lesion and sealing the area with heat.

The method used depends on the type, size, and location of the lesion, as well as whether it needs to be tested for skin cancer.

Biopsy or histology may be done if there’s any concern about the lesion’s nature.

Frequently asked questions

Is it necessary to remove all skin lesions?

No. Many lesions are benign and don’t require removal. However, lesions that are changing, irritating, or cosmetically undesirable can and often should be removed.

Is the procedure painful?

We use local anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Some mild soreness afterward is normal and easily managed.

Will there be a scar?

Most minor procedures leave a small scar, but our clinicians use minimally invasive techniques and give you advice on scar care to reduce visibility.

How long does the procedure take?

Most skin lesion removals take 15–30 minutes and are performed in clinic.

Can I go back to work the same day?

Yes, in most cases you can return to your usual activities the same or next day.

Will the lesion grow back?

If the lesion is completely removed, regrowth is unlikely. Some skin lesions, like warts or cysts, may recur and require future treatment.
